Organized by the AIANY Professional Practice Committee, this event is part of the AIANY Summer Practice Series, a summer-long series of weekly programs looking at topics across practice areas, with a focus on the challenges of small- to medium-sized firms. Through the experience of three successful firms, we will explore the best ways to manage your practice during times of success as well as during economic downturns. Join us for this discussion with three prominent principals involved with seamlessly transitioning firm principals, scaling down from a recession, and knowing how and when to expand your practice. The evening will consist of presentations followed by a question and answer session.

Kenneth A. Lewis,AIA, is a Partner in SOM’s New York office. He joined the firm in 1986 and has worked on a diverse range of projects including mixed-use developments, commercial and residential towers, corporate headquarters, and healthcare facilities. Lewis began his career at SOM as a designer, serving as senior designer on numerous projects on a national and international scale. He went on to distinguish himself as a talented project manager, helping to facilitate the design process for some of SOM’s most innovative projects. With a special focus on New York, Lewis has managed and brought to successful completion several projects of enormous scale, complexity, and visibility.
Kevin McClurkan, AIA, LEED AP, is a Management Partner at Ennead Architects, where he ensures that operations run smoothly and consistently with the firm’s mission. In addition to his project-related responsibilities, he handles the resolution of financial, schedule, and personnel issues. Kevin leads projects across typologies and has facilitated the development of many of the firm’s signature, award-winning projects. Dedicated to creating transformative architecture, he works to promote an integrated practice of design excellence supported by technical innovation and a collaborative, team-based project management culture. Kevin has had a leading role in Ennead’s expansion to an international practice and in opening the firm’s Asia office in Shanghai.
Jennifer Sage, FAIA, LEED AP, is a founding partner of Sage and Coombe Architects WBE. Since its inception, the practice has focused on the design of cultural, civic, and educational work. A native New Yorker, she has juried and taught at Yale, Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, RISD, and Catholic University, where for three years, she ran an honors studio in Rome. Jennifer serves as co-chair of the Exhibitions Committee at the Center for Architecture, and from 2015 to 2019, she was the Vice President for Design Excellence on the board of the New York Chapter of the AIA. She represents the AIA on the Board of the Fine Arts Federation and is a member of the board of the Center for Architecture.
In 2002, Hayes Slade, AIA, co-founded Slade Architecture and is a licensed architect in New York. In addition to the work at her practice, she teaches interior design at Parsons the New School for Design and serves as President of AIA New York. In 2010, Slade was selected by the Architectural League of New York for the Emerging Voices program and she served as a juror for the program the following year. Slade has also taught a design studio at Syracuse University School of Architecture and served on a variety of other design juries including AIA awards NJ Chapter and Electrolux Design Lab.
