Please join us for a presentation and discussion with British artist Bruce Munro, whose six-acre light-based project, “Field of Light at Freedom Plaza,” will open on Manhattan’s East Side on December 15. The year-long installation features an array of 17,000 low-level fiber-optic lights, subtly changing hues, in an immersive community experience. Munro, who has created site-specific Fields of Light in multiple countries and states, will describe how he interprets each site and how New York’s installation reflects its unique urban locale.

Speakers:
Bruce Munro, Artist

Moderator:
Sara Cochran, Chief Curator, The Church

About the Speakers:
Bruce Munro is a dual citizen of Britain and Australia and lives in Wiltshire, UK. He is best known for his large-scale light-based installations originally inspired by a camping trip to Uluru in Australia in 1992. An artist diarist, for over 30 years he has collected and recorded ideas in his sketchbooks which are reflected in his numerous installations around the world, including in the United Kingdom, Japan, Denmark, Australia, and eight states in the United States. His first Field of Light was realized in 2004, and his artistic journey is the subject of a recent book Light Field – The Art of Bruce Munro by Fiona Graber.

Sara Cochran is Chief Curator of The Church, an exhibition center and residency program established by the artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik in 2020 in Sag Harbor. Previously, she held positions as Director and Chief Curator of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Phoenix Art Museum. She earned her Ph.D. in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
