ResArch Now: Lunch/Learn with the 2020 Residential Design Award Winners

Six Unique Stories on Residential Architecture Commissions

This program series, organized by AIANY Custom Residential Architects Network and co-hosted by the BSA Residential Design Committee, will explore the unique perspectives of six practitioners who were recipients of the 2020 AIANY + BSA Residential Design Awards.

What is the state-of-the-art design language used in residential architecture—new construction, restoration, renovation, and preservation? How do environmental protection, historic preservation, and land conservation regulations play into a design team’s vision? What design trends, technical innovations, and planning tools are most suited to a rural region, an urban area, or a historic district? Where are the crossovers between urban residential architecture, rural residential architecture, and historic preservation? How and when are consultants brought into the design process? What role do they play in determining the final outcome?

These and other questions about the issues that are currently impacting residential architecture will be addressed by leading design teams from Boston and New York City, who will discuss projects locally, in rural outposts, and abroad. Each design team created a unique video presentation featuring one-on-one and cross-team conversations, along with accompanying visuals that explain their unique process and perspectives on residential architecture commissions. All six projects were hailed as the best of residential architecture today by AIA New York and Boston Society of Architects, the two oldest and most established AIA chapters in the nation.

There are three sessions organized around critical topics in residential architecture, each with two of the winning project teams.
