Communicating Architecture: How to Tell A Compelling Story
At the beginning of every project there is a story; an effective one requires a narrative that responds to more than just a design problem. The third panel of the 2019 TORCH Mentorship program explores how effective communication strategies are used to acquire potential clients and develop lasting relationships. A panel of FAIA members will share their approaches before joining roundtable groups for more intimate group conversations.

About the speakers:
Joann Gonchar, FAIA, LEED AP, is a senior editor at Architectural Record. She joined the magazine in 2006, after eight years at its sister publication Engineering News-Record. She was also a key member of the founding editorial team for the sustainable design publication, GreenSource. Before starting her career as a journalist, Joann worked for several U.S. architects and spent three years in Kobe, Japan, with the firm Team Zoo, Atelier Iruka. She earned a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University. She is licensed to practice architecture in New York State.
Andrew Bernheimer, FAIA, is a Brooklyn-based architect and Assistant Professor of Architecture at the Parsons School of Design. Bernheimer leads an eponymous firm responsible for a wide variety of residential, civic, and cultural projects, including new multi-unit affordable housing developments across the five boroughs as well as award-winning private residences in the northeast region. He edited “Timber in the City”, a book featuring innovative practices in wood construction published by ORO Editions. Bernheimer sits on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Public Architecture, a member of the Van Alen Institute’s Program Council and a fellow in the Forum for Urban Design. While Director of the M.Arch program at Parsons (from 2012 – 2016) Bernheimer oversaw a graduate program known for its connections between design and practice and a distinct focus on New York City’s communities and their constructed environments. The program includes a signature design-build studio and cross-disciplinary curricular opportunities with graduate programs in lighting and interior design. Previously Bernheimer was a founding partner of the award-winning firm Della Valle Bernheimer. In 2009 “Think/Make”, a monograph on the first decade of his practice at Della Valle Bernheimer was published by Princeton Architectural Press.
Katherine Chia, FAIA, is a founding principal of Desai Chia Architecture. Since 1996, she and her partner & husband, Arjun Desai, have established the firm’s reputation for authentic design, creating inspiring environments expressive of light, materials, and spaces that foster collaboration; Desai Chia’s portfolio includes cultural, residential, and commercial projects as well as commissions for product design and collaborations with artists. Desai Chia’s projects have been published extensively and received numerous accolades including numerous AIA and American Architecture Awards, Interior Design Best of Year Awards, Good Design Awards, and an AIA Institute Honor Award. ARCHITECT Magazine ranked Desai Chia Architecture #19 in the nation for Design. Chia grew up in New York State and Belgium. She earned her Master of Architecture degree from M.I.T. and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College. Prior to founding Desai Chia Architecture, she worked for Maya Lin on numerous art and architecture commissions. Katherine is a registered architect in the states of New York and Connecticut. She has also been a faculty member in the architecture department at Parsons The New School of Design. She is a trustee emerita of Amherst College and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
Frank Greene, FAIA, is Principal at RicciGreene Associates, is an internationally recognized leader in justice planning and design. He is past chair of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Justice (AAJ), a founding member of the Sustainable Justice initiative of the AIA/AAJ, and is a frequent speaker and writer on justice work. As lead designer and collaborator his buildings have received many design awards. Greene is a graduate of the Howard University School of Architecture and Planning, and continued his studies at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Frances Halsband, FAIA, is a founding partner of Kliment Halsband Architects, a leading design firm whose work has been recognized with over 150 awards for design excellence and is the recipient of the AIA Firm Award and the AIA New York Medal of Honor. Frances was the first woman president of the AIA New York Chapter and The Architectural League of New York. She served as Dean of the School of Architecture at Pratt Institute, and has been visiting professor of design at Columbia, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, University of California Berkeley, University of Maryland, University of Virginia, Ball State and North Carolina State University. She is a former Commissioner of the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission and has served as an architectural advisor to Brown, Harvard, Smith College, the U.S. Department of State, and the Federal Reserve Bank. Last year Halsbrand circulated a petition and brought to the AIA Conference the Resolution prohibiting abuse and harassment within the professional community.
