The Trunk Line: The Future Beyond the Gateway Tunnel

New York City’s rail travel operates primarily through Pennsylvania Station and Grand Central Terminal. Both function as terminus stations, creating rail transit congestion that impacts the region. Independent transportation advocates from the Regional Plan Association (RPA), ReThink Studio, and the Institute for Rational Urban Mobility (IRUM) are all in agreement that through-running trains are the solution to loosen the regional rail knot at Penn Station.

All advocate for two new tunnels under the Hudson River, referred to as the Gateway Tunnel Project, to increase capacity and allow for repair of the two existing tunnels. However, they hold differing views on the alignment of a Trans-Hudson regional connection, known as the Trunk Line.

The AIANY Transportation and Infrastructure Committee presents an evening program on the Trunk Line, examining proposals presented by the RPA, ReThink, and IRUM. A moderated discussion will follow to explore the impact on the region should lack of Federal funding prevent the development of the Gateway Tunnels.

Hear views and contribute your own in a forum that will explore this vital link between New York and New Jersey, as well as between Washington DC and Boston on the Northeast Rail Corridor.
