Cane and Able: Seniors and Public Transit

The AIANY Design for Aging Committee and the AIANY Transportation & Infrastructure Committee present a panel about meeting the public transit challenges seniors and disabled persons face. Local and international professionals will provide an overview of the current state of transit and future plans to improve mobility experiences for the most vulnerable users. The panel will not only address broken elevators and pot-holed streets but also alternatives to traditional subway and bus transit and anticipated changes to Paratransit (Access-a-Ride). Presenters will place a special focus on urban transit features in Japan due to the country’s large senior population. The conversation will wrap up with a comparison of Japan’s transit with the current systems in New York City.
