Design as Protest is a nationwide action occurring on Friday, January 20 that will connect activists, community organizers, architects, planners, designers, and artists in order to upend injustice, discrimination, and hate. At the New York cypher, we will think of new ways to use design in support of at-risk communities during the next administration.

Why are we doing this?
The Design Justice Platform (DJP) seeks to establish a set of ethical guidelines for operating as designers of the built environment. We will organize around our professional ethical imperative and develop a movement that operates with three explicit goals: first, to aggregate our collective design resources and references into a framework for justice; second, to list and provide opportunities for collective action on Inauguration Day and beyond; and third, to synthesize the information received into a set of DJP guiding principles that will inform the way design practitioners engage in political discourse

What is the intended outcome?
Post-cypher, ideas that are generated will be implemented as public space interventions in the form of billboards, wheatpaste posters, yard signs, etc. Concepts from these nationwide cyphers will be compiled into a visual compendium for activists, designers, and artists to use, and ultimately tackle, challenges faced during the new administration.
