The Brooklyn Bridge is a National Historic Landmark and a New York City Landmark that has been in use for almost 140 years. This presentation discusses the engineering challenges and solutions related to the last two rehabilitation contracts (Contract 6 and 7).

The Brooklyn Bridge Rehabilitation Program is part of a NYCDOT program to bring the bridge to modern standards. Beginning back in 1945 and over several major contracts over the past 75 years, NYCDOT has made tremendous improvements while preserving the historic aspects of this iconic bridge. NYCDOT has implemented construction contracts of over $1 billion in just the last two decades, which speaks to the commitment to preserve this iconic bridge and one of the world’s most visited places for a very long time to come.

Contract 6 required the removal of lead-based paint in an environmentally correct manner approved by NYCDOT. Since the Brooklyn Bridge is a historic structure, special measures have been taken to preserve some of its original elements. Contract 7 will restore and strengthen the existing masonry arch blocks on both approaches to the main bridge.
