Equity X Design Mappy Hour: Sketching Equitable Workplaces

Inclusive design has been a hot topic since the discrimination of traditional public restrooms made its way onto the political agenda last year. But inclusive design principles can and should be applied well beyond restrooms to everyday building types like offices, museums and libraries. Progressive institutions and companies that want to attract diverse audiences and workers must consider design as a catalyst for these efforts by creating interactive places to engage people of different ages, genders, races, religions and disabilities who have been left out of the equation.

Join JSA (Joel Sanders Architect) and QSPACE for an interactive happy hour and discussion that explores the design consequences of this urgent social justice issue, particularly as it pertains to the workplace.

Joel Sanders is the Principal of JSA and a Professor at Yale School of Architecture where he is the Director of the M.Arch II Program. Editor of STUD: Architectures of Masculinity and Groundwork: Between Landscape and Architecture, Sanders’ writings and practice have explored the complex relationship between culture and social space, looking at the impact that evolving cultural forces (such as gender identity and the body, technology and new media, and the nature/culture dualism) have on the designed environment. JSA projects have been featured in international exhibitions and permanent collections of MoMA, SF MoMA, Art Institute of Chicago and the Carnegie Museum of Art. The firm has received numerous awards, including six New York Chapter AIA Design Awards, three New York State AIA Design Awards, three Interior Design Best of Year Awards, two ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Awards, and Design Citations from Progressive Architecture.

Seb Choe is a multimedia designer at JSA where they manage Stalled!, an interdisciplinary design-research project that creates inclusive restroom prototypes for a wide range of embodiments. A recent graduate of Columbia University, Seb is an activist dedicated to reimagining relationships of power in the built environment, working with groups like the Mohawk Valley Collective, the Rikers Education Program and The Architecture Lobby. They perform and produce experimental electronic music and video propaganda in Brooklyn, NY under a handful of pseudonyms, and conduct the occasional lecture on virtual romance in contemporary Asia.

QSPACE is a queer architecture research and design collaborative founded by Lauren Johnson and Ryan Day in 2016, shortly after graduation from the Master of Architecture program at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP). The organization defines itself as mixing queer theory, social justice, and design practice. QSPACE offers a platform for research projects by students and professionals working on queerness in the built environment. Current works include Coded Plumbing, a project investigating gender inclusive bathroom design, and the Queer Architecture Archive, an online archive of architecture and urban planning projects on queer topics in the built environment.
