The events of 9/11 devastated critical Lower Manhattan transportation systems. In rebuilding the World Trade Center (WTC) site, planners established a master plan framework for future construction that, after 25 years of design and implementation, has proven to be a catalyst for urban development and can serve as a benchmark for how to serve the public good. This presentation will outline the role played by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) in engaging effectively with multiple stakeholder organizations and the public, including the use of state-of-the art graphics, signage, temporary and permanent solutions for post-disaster response. It will delve in detail on the interplay between building and district planning at the municipal level and will demonstrate how municipal planning supports economic development.
