Join the AIANY Interiors Committee for an architectural tour of Princeton University examining how contemporary design, adaptive reuse, and interior interventions are reshaping one of the country’s most architecturally layered university campuses. Moving between new construction and the transformation of historic buildings, the tour will consider how architects respond to existing contexts while accommodating changing institutional, social, and environmental priorities.
The tour will begin at Princeton Station and the Lewis Arts Complex before continuing to the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center, Chancellor Green, Prospect House and Garden, and the Princeton University Art Museum. At each stop, participants will hear from architects and campus representatives involved in the projects and examine approaches to accessibility, wellness, sustainability, preservation, programmatic flexibility, circulation, and social interaction.
The afternoon will focus on the Princeton University Art Museum. Participants will have lunch at Mosaic, the museum’s restaurant, accompanied by remarks from Princeton University Campus Architect Ron McCoy on the museum and its relationship to the broader evolution of the campus. Following lunch, the group will take an in-depth architectural tour of the museum, examining its organization, materiality, exhibition spaces, and relationship to the surrounding landscape and campus.
The projects visited throughout the day offer distinct approaches to working within an established campus fabric, from the expansion of recreational and wellness facilities to the adaptation of historic interiors and the creation of a major new cultural institution. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between interior architecture and existing structures, the integration of building systems and materials, and the role of architecture and landscape in creating inclusive and welcoming environments.
Taken together, the projects provide a comparative study of how institutions can preserve architectural identity while adapting buildings and interiors to support evolving academic, cultural, recreational, and community uses.
