This program focuses on decarbonization as a systems optimization challenge. Design professionals often engage in decisions about energy through the lens of equipment specs and energy models. While useful, the demand side often dominates. This program pulls the camera back to show the full stack: how electricity is generated, moved, managed, and ultimately consumed, and the opportunities that arise as buildings are increasingly transactive participants in the energy system.

Agenda:
Part one: The Grid You Didn't (need to) Learn in Studio
Part two: The Technology Toolbox
Part three: The Shift: Buildings as Grid Assets
Part four: Case Studies and Design Decisions
Closing: A Framework for Thinking

Panelists:
Cara Carmichael, Associate Vice Chancellor for Sustainability, University of Colorado-Boulder
Paul Farnan, Vice President, New York Power Authority

Moderator:
Brendan Owens, Chief Sustainability Officer, HKS
