This meeting is offered in-person. Please contact [email protected] with any questions. See the RSVP form HERE.

The AIANY Building Science Committee (BSC) is focused on topics dealing with building performance, materials, and innovation in the built environment. Through interdisciplinary conversation, research, and educational programming, the committee promotes and disseminates ideas and initiatives that address sustainability, resilience, health, and building performance. The committee aims to share knowledge, develop public programs, and foster collaboration across design, construction, research, and policy.

We would like to extend an invitation to an open forum and networking event for all those interested in learning more about our committee and what we do. Our committee is comprised of members from all disciplines and professional roles including architects, engineers, contractors, academics, and more…. anyone with a shared interest is welcome! Light refreshments and beverages will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!

The event also includes a guest presentation from Momo Sun titled “Exploring Tall Wood New Code Provisions for Tall Timber Structures”

As interest in and use of mass timber in the U.S. has grown, so too has interest in pushing these timber structures to greater heights. Prior to the 2021 International Building Code, using international examples of successful tall wood buildings as precedent, some designers proposed tall wood projects in the states using a project-specific performance-based design approach. In order to provide a uniform set of code provisions for these tall wood buildings, the International Code Council established an ad hoc committee on tall wood buildings that proposed a set of code changes allowing up to 18 stories of mass timber construction. Those code changes were announced as approved in January 2019 and became part of the 2021 International Building Code. Following a brief discussion of history and motivators, this presentation will introduce the new tall wood code provisions and construction types, as well as the technical research and testing that supported their adoption.

Momo Sun is passionate about building sustainable structures and enjoys helping developers and design teams find elegant wood solutions that are also cost effective. A licensed Professional Engineer in New York and Ontario, she received her M.Eng. in Civil Engineering from MIT and a BASc from the University of Toronto. She has experience working in both the U.S. and Canada, and, prior to WoodWorks, was a Project Manager and Structural Engineer for commercial, healthcare, and institutional projects. Her expertise is in mass timber where she assists developers, architects, and structural engineers with their timber projects from schematic design to construction. Momo is based in the New York City area and her region covers New York State.

The committees of AIA New York are the foundations from which the Chapter positions itself in the field of architecture, whether through discussion, advocacy, policy making and development, event and exhibition planning, or other endeavors.

Committees meet monthly, usually at the Center for Architecture. AIA members, AIA associate members, and general public are all welcome to participate.

If you have questions or are considering attending a meeting for the first time, contact each committee’s co-chairs for more information at aiany.org/committees.
