Please join us for the launch of A People’s Handbook of Surveillance for New York! The launch will feature a thought provoking discussion of urgent surveillance issues by panelists, including Dr. Alex Vitale (Brooklyn College), Dr. Randa Serhan (Barnard College) and Obi Afryie (Legal Defense Fund), moderated by Dr. Lisa Berglund (Morgan State University). Free copies of the book will be available for registrants to take home!

The minute we walk out our front door, we are tracked and traced by numerous surveillance technologies—from surveillance cameras, to license plate readers, to subway fare collectors—that are embedded in the public spaces of New York. A People’s Handbook of Surveillance is an accessible public resource that explains what these technologies are, what information they collect about us, and the risks they pose when they are frequently abused by law enforcement and ICE. These topics are increasingly urgent, as an expansion of a policing and immigration enforcement surveillance apparatus presents risks undocumented immigrants and communities of color through oversurveillance, and threatens democracy when imposed on protest and the exercising of free speech. Above all, the Handbook is a call to action and resource for designers and planners of the built environment, legal advocates, and community leaders who envision a different future for their city that is free of over policing and oversurveillance.

This is a free eventbut we welcome a donation of any size to support the work of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project in their mission to dismantle governmental systems of mass surveillance that disproportionately impact marginalized communities.
