Dual Cities: Social Housing in London + New York

A housing tale of two cities. Growing up in tandem and maturing as urban democracies during the 19th and 20th centuries, London and New York have both influenced the shape and form of cities around the world. With global ambitions, post-industrial economies and international demographics, there is much that connects the two. Today, as both cities grapple with housing crises, fueled by escalating prices, aging stock and a scarcity of genuinely affordable homes, the two metropolises are united by a pressing need to address urban housing provision and social equity.

Marking the publication of the new RIBA book of the same name, this international online discussion explores parallel housing practice and urban cultures. With New York heading for a heated mayoral election in November and London drafting its new spatial plan, it asks, what are the key housing takeaways from these cities and what can designers and policy makers around the world draw from their experiences.
