After a year of dedicated advocacy, the City Council voted 31-20 to approve City of Yes for Housing Opportunity and Speaker Adams’ City of All plan on December 5, 2024, enabling the creation of 80,000 housing units alongside a $5 billion commitment from the City and State. Tackling the city’s housing crisis is no small feat, and the vote was a monumental step in the right direction, updating the city’s antiquated zoning to create affordable housing across New York City.  Since the draft zoning text was released in April 2024, architects and design professionals have been examining how the zoning changes will impact their projects and how they can use the tools unlocked to their advantage. Now that the final zoning text (with modifications from the City Planning Commission and the City Council Land Use Committee) is implemented, it is time to take a detailed look at the zoning changes, learn the new rules, and understand what new opportunities are available.

Join us for a technical training session to hear from the Department of City Planning (DCP) experts—Frank Ruchala, Director of Zoning, and Christopher Hayner, Deputy Director of Zoning—on the critical changes you need to know. This program will take a deep dive into the technical components of the proposal and provide an opportunity to ask detailed questions directly to the zoning experts at DCP.

Speakers:
Frank Ruchala, Director of Zoning, Department of City Planning
Christopher Hayner, Deputy Director of Zoning, Department of City Planning
