Crit Collective – Invitation to inform new initiative supporting schools of architecture and the profession

How can we improve design jury selection and advance collaboration between the profession and the academy?

Schools of Architecture around the world engage external professionals as well as internal practitioners and design faculty to participate in design juries at the midpoint and final presentation of design studios each semester. Ensuring that a broad cohort of jurors is available throughout each semester is often a challenge faced by departments, and by individual instructors as well, depending on where the responsibility for assembling reviewers lies.

Sonya Falkovskaia and Andrea Lamberti have observed these challenges at several institutions in the New York City area and propose that graduates of architecture schools and working professionals can help schools of architecture to broaden and enrich jury composition. For example, the existence of a database of professionals willing to participate in reviews could enhance student and faculty experiences during review periods each year. Crit Collective aspires to create a dialogue with institutions and professionals in order to understand challenges in these areas.

The initiative is currently in a preliminary assessment stage to test this premise and determine next steps for development of the database. The feedback of AIA New York’s Women in Architecture committee will be greatly appreciated to inform the next stage of development. During the meeting, Andrea and Sonya will provide an overview on work completed to date and pose prompts for discussion.
