The NYC Department of City Planning, the NYC Economic Development Corporation, and NYC Small Business Services are working to bolster the city’s industrial sector through the NYC Industrial Plan—a comprehensive framework to support the development of industrial and manufacturing businesses and jobs.

A century ago, New York City’s industrial economy was oriented around ports and manufacturing. While today’s industrial economy is smaller, it provides 15 percent of all jobs and continues to be an essential part of NYC’s economy, remaining essential to the city’s operations and future sustainability. However, industrial businesses face substantial challenges, including high operating costs, real-estate pressures, and climate-related risks, such as flooding and pollution, that can also affect surrounding communities.

The NYC Industrial Plan, required by City Council legislation, will explore how the city can best support the development of a modern and growing sustainable industrial economy and well-utilized industrial areas. This event will bring together experts in the field to examine the state of NYC’s industrial economy and discuss key issues that may shape the plan as it is developed in the months ahead.
