Join DOCOMOMO US/New York Tri-State for a guided in-person tour of an exhibition of the work of California mid-century Modern designer Evelyn Ackerman (1924-2012), led by curator James Zemaitis at the prominent design gallery R & Company in Tribeca. This is the first exhibition outside of California dedicated to Ackerman’s designs. It includes 30 bold mosaic panels (produced between 1957 and 1982 in a workshop of artisans near Mexico City) and hand-hooked tapestry rugs (made in Osaka, Japan, during the same period) drawn from what is believed to be the largest private collection of Ackerman designs

Together with her husband Jerome (1920-2019), Evelyn formed a partnership that epitomized the mid-twentieth century Californian version of the “Good Design” movement promoted by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Respecting traditional craft methods, Evelyn designed affordable decorations for the new modern houses of California, and her work frequently appeared on the covers of the Los Angeles Times Home Magazine in vignettes representing the “California Look.”

There has been recent renewed interest in the Ackermans’ works, which have been included in major museum exhibitions such as “Living in a Modern Way: California Design 1930-1965,” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Crate and Barrel’s sister brand CB2 recently launched its new Ackerman Modern collection reproducing original Ackerman designs created between 1948 and 2012.
