Please join us for a tour of The Suffolk, JG Neukomm Architecture (JGNA)’s latest project with the Gotham Organization, in collaboration with Dattner Architects. Located in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, The Suffolk is a new 30-story residential development, featuring 25 percent affordable units and a mixed-use podium. To be authentically responsive to the neighborhood’s rich cultural and social kaleidoscope, JGNA’s approach was informed by complex storytelling. As with many of JGNA’s projects, the design began with a photographic survey, in this case focusing on the joints between buildings to tell a story about complexity: when buildings collide haphazardly it yields an unsanitized reading of architectural neighborliness. The project’s interiors continue to build upon this theme of complexity and layering, as seen in the lobby’s vaulted arch system as well as the planning and detailing of amenities. JGNA’s interest in channeling diverse voices extended to the art curation as well. By working with local galleries and printing archival images, JGNA tells a visual story from multiple viewpoints. The project is ultimately meant to be another link in the historic continuum of the Lower East Side, reflective of the neighborhood’s rich diversity of voices.
