AIANY Women in Architecture Committee Meeting & Black History Month Speaker 

Why do numbers matter? In celebration of Black History Month, please join AIANY WIA for our February committee meeting, featuring Katherine Williams, AIA, architect, writer, educator, curator and community organizer. Katherine will share her personal journey and exploration into the data of African-American and women architects when she was completing her licensure exams. Seeking to increase the number of architects who looked like herself led to her path of advocacy and work focused on visibility, networking, and support for those who are underrepresented in the profession. Come be inspired, learn and discuss how to be better advocates for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion!

Speaker:
Katherine Williams, AIA, NOMA, LEED AP, Assistant Director of Capital Projects, Georgetown University

About the Speaker:

Katherine Williams is a licensed architect in Northern Virginia and currently an Assistant Director of Capital Projects at Georgetown University. Her career path includes work in traditional architecture firms, community development, and managing commercial construction for a general contractor. She restarted the Black Women in Architecture brunch in DC, an annual networking event, co-founded the Desiree Cooper ARE Scholarship, and is a founding collaborator for Riding the Vortex, winner of the 2022 AIA Whitney Young Award. Katherine was the NOMA magazine editor from 2009-2014. In 2020, Katherine published Melvin Mitchell’s book African American Architects: Embracing Culture and Building Urban Communities.

Katherine served as chair of the AIA Housing and Community Development KC advisory group, on the AIA Continuing Education Committee, and on the board of the Village of Love and Resistance (VOLAR) in east Baltimore. Katherine was a Rose Architectural Fellow in San Francisco. She received the 2016 AIA Virginia Emerging Professionals award and the 2013 National Organization of Minority Architects President’s Award. She writes at katherinerw.com.

The committees of AIA New York are the foundations from which the Chapter positions itself in the field of architecture, whether through discussion, advocacy, policy making and development, event and exhibition planning, or other endeavors.

Committees meet monthly, usually at the Center for Architecture. AIA members, AIA associate members, and general public are all welcome to participate.
