John A. Paulson Center

Meet at the 181 Mercer Street New York, NY 10012 (between Houston Street and Bleecker Street ).

Join the AIANY Cultural Facilities Committee as we set out to discover the architecture of John A. Paulson Center at NYU. This tour will include the newly-opened interiors of the building, with a focus on the common area and the performing arts spaces.

Designed by Davis Brody Bond and Kieran Timberlake, the 735,000-square-foot complex consists of three towers rising from a full-block podium between Houston, Mercer, and Bleecker Streets and I.M. Pei’s University Village complex. The project is the culmination of over a decade of proposals, planning, and building that dates back to the mid 2000s. The project boasts classrooms than any other NYU building and NYU's first professional-level proscenium, fly-loft theatre for student productions, plus a sports center and instructional, rehearsal, practice, and performance spaces for NYU's drama and music programs. Study spaces and a commons are designed specifically for university without a quad. Housing for freshmen and for faculty also make up part of the program.

About the Speakers:
Daisy Houang has over 16 years of experience working on a variety of projects ranging from small-scale fixture design to large-scale, multi-use urban developments. Her work in New York, London, and Paris has given her a global awareness of design, including insight into cultural methodologies and ideologies and an understanding of architectural practices in the United States and abroad. She is currently applying this knowledge in her current role on New York University’s 181 Mercer project, a new 735,000-square-foot, mixed-use facility providing new facilities for several departments ranging from athletics, performing arts, and academic classrooms to university housing for students and faculty.

Susan Radin is a Project Executive with Turner Construction. She was in charge of the construction of the three theaters and the Orchestra Rehearsal Room at the 181 Mercer Street project. Other similar projects include the renovation of the Rainbow Room and the construction of conference centers for Time Inc, Bloomberg, and Goldman Sachs. Radin was the lead estimator for food, beverage, and merchandise at Yankee Stadium and worked on the original construction of Frederick P Rose Hall for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Before Turner, Radin was a Production Manager, Stage Manager, and Stage Electrician for live events. Clients included Jazz at Lincoln Center, JVC Jazz Festival, the Spoleto Festival in South Carolina, and numerous Off-Broadway theaters, among others.

Peter Rosenbaum is both a designer and project manager with an impressive range of completed projects including experimental theaters, cruise ships, and more conventional performing arts centers. Most notable is his work on projects that require flexibility in thinking and a broad range of knowledge to meet unexpected challenges. In addition to the Paulson Center, his projects include the Shed, MoMA's Studio Gallery, the renovation of Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Oprah Winfrey Theatre at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Screen Actors Guild Foundation’s Robin Williams Center for Media And Entertainment, the renovation of Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard School at Lincoln Center; the Lincoln Center Film Society’s Elinor Bunin Film Center, the Park Avenue Armory, and the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, among many others. Rosenbaum received his B.A. magna cum laude at Harvard in Visual and Environmental Studies and his M.A in Architecture from Columbia University. He is an Associate of the AIA, a member of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, and former President of the American Society of Theatre Consultants, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors.
