New Urbanist Hoboken Waterfront Walking Tour

Since the 1990’s a collaborative effort of the City of Hoboken, Port Authority of NY/NJ and private sector partners transformed Hoboken’s 50 acres of unused (previously industrial) south waterfront into a mixed-use New Urbanist development adjacent to existing transit, which extends the existing street grid, preserves the area’s historic character, and provides not only continuous public access to the waterfront, but increases public open space along the tree lined esplanade. Laura Sachs, AIA, will lead a tour that illustrates how this development reflects the progressive attributes of New Urbanism design.

Hoboken North End Redevelopment Plan, separated from Hoboken South by the Steven’s Institute, continued transforming industrial waterfront land in 2017-18 with similar design principles. With considerable public input and land use studies the north Hoboken area is a highly desirable neighborhood with mixed use including commercial, residential and recreational spaces.

Hoboken’s also boasts spectacular views of Manhattan along the continuously public access of the waterfront, unparalleled access to public transit, award winning parks and esplanade and, due to various design techniques Hoboken has employed (such as ‘daylighting’ at intersections) the city can boast 4 years of ZERO pedestrian/biker fatalities, as a beacon of ‘Vision Zero.’
