In conjunction with the New Practices New York exhibition, the AIANY New Practices Committee is hosting a series of salon-style programs featuring the six winners of the competition's last cycle. New Practices New York, a biennial competition since 2006, serves as New York City’s preeminent platform to recognize and promote new and innovative architecture and design firms. Each event in the series will feature a stimulating conversation between the firm principals and an invited architect or critic, highlighting the range of work and approaches to practice among the winners.
Firm:
GRT Architects
Interviewer:
Marc Tsurumaki, AIA, Founding Principal, LTL Architects; Adjunct Professor, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation
About the Firm:
GRT Architects engages, innovates, and communicates by building. The firm has grown its practice exclusively with built work commissions and collaborations. As architects who studied history before design, the firm leaders find truth more interesting than fiction. They look for what makes projects unique and craft responses that they hope are both surprising and appropriate. GRT Architects leverages technical, visual, and historical literacy to bring more to a project than a client asks for. The firm’s love and respect for history yields an understanding that the past is layered and compatible with new work, executed confidently in its own voice. Founders Tal Schori and Rustam Mehta met in third grade and proceeded, unintentionally, to attend the same university and architecture school. After working at different firms for seven years, they decided to start a business together.
About Interviewer:
Marc Tsurumaki is a founding Principal of LTL Architects. He is Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at Columbia University GSAPP and has taught at multiple institutions, most recently as the Davenport Visiting Professor at Yale University. Marc is currently the President of the Board of Directors of Storefront for Art and Architecture. He received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Princeton University.
