Biking in NYC Now: Opportunities and Limitations Within Urban Infrastructure

As we take stock after the pandemic, it’s clear that more people are competing for New York City's limited biking infrastructure. The increased demand has come from residents and tourists alike, as employees attempt to maintain control of their personal health and safety on their commutes and businesses look to avoid vehicular congestion for last-mile deliveries. Biking is one of the most reliable means of mass transit within our city and can support physical health. But New York City’s current biking infrastructure does not offer the same opportunities and level of service to all New Yorkers throughout the city. Additionally, a lack of biking education and inconsistent enforcement results in issues of safety and practicality. As agencies, elected officials, and advocacy groups push for continued progress on New York’s biking system, how can they ensure issues of equity, education, and enforcement are addressed?

About the AIANY Civic Leadership Program
The AIANY Civic Leadership Program (CLP) is designed to cultivate architectural professionals into civic leaders. Through a six-month mentorship and training program, ten designers develop skills to engage in the civic process. The CLP provides opportunities to interface with government officials, community development organizations, and local stakeholders through development sessions and public events. The program also provides opportunities to improve communication and public speaking skills and engage in community outreach and consensus building. AIA New York is excited to collaborate with nycoba|NOMA for this year’s program.
