Brick Beyond Style
The panel will define the various certifications parameters of LEED, Fitwel, ILFI Zero, and BREEAM. Participants will be able to evaluate sustainable best practices of reaching Net-0 reviewing existing projects. The projects will showcase exterior trends and how the design has been adjusted to fit this environmental initiative.

HSW Justification
The program reviews strategies employed on completed project to achieve net zero. Various green rating/certification systems and their criteria will be discussed and terms related to sustainable building will be defined. New and old design strategies effectiveness and compatibility with current building design trends will be compared including passive solar, high-efficiency lighting and renewable energy.

About the Speakers
Farah (Ahmad) Qadeer, RA, LEED AP BD+C is a licensed public sector Architect and LEED Accredited Professional based in New York City, specializing in building energy efficiency and green building technical standards. Her public sector experience in city government agencies includes sustainable design review of projects, assessment and development of technical standards and energy code compliance. Additionally, as a green building journalist for national publications, Farah is passionate about sharing her expertise on environmental policy and high performance design. Mark Faulkner, RA is a registered architect and Associate Principal at PAU, responsible for coordinating and overseeing design and documentation among other duties. He is currently the Project Architect of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum expansion project in Cleveland, Ohio. Additionally, Mark spearheads the Schuylkill Yards project, which entails the design of two towers that house office, lab, and residential development across 1.5M square feet in the heart of Philadelphia, PA. Before joining PAU, Mark accumulated over twelve years of professional experience as a Studio Leader at Standard Architects, where he was responsible for all phases from concept design through construction administration, with extensive experience on site. He has worked on a diverse range of project and building types, including mixed-use, residential, workplace, hospitality, spiritual, adaptive reuse, landscape, and public space. Mark earned a post-professional Master of Architecture II degree from the Cooper Union, and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University.
As a Design Principal at Gensler Chicago, Scott Hurst, AIA has brought his passion and energy to some of Gensler’s most influential and award winning projects. His focus on local, contextual, and community driven projects can be seen across a wide array of building types including detail oriented gallery spaces, corporate headquarters, and innovative learning environments. Scott’s unique combination of conceptual and technical thinking coupled with his unwavering commitment to clients make him highly effective team leader and a sought after resource across the firm. Outside of the office, Scott can be found teaching a graduate class at the University of Illinois focusing on innovation affordable housing solutions. His recent work with the Urban Land Institute reimagined the post pandemic future of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue and the Magnificent Mile. Examples of Scott’s work have been featured in various publications including MIT’s The Journal of Architectural Education, GQ, and Wired magazine. In 2021 Scott was awarded an honorary Doctorate of the Arts from Columbia College for his contributions to the field of architectural design.
As a current Design Architect and Associate at Gensler Chicago, and a graduate of Tulane University and the Architectural Association in London, Sean McGuire, AIA’s extensive background includes residential amenities, libraries, wellness centers, union halls, and adaptive reuse projects. Sean approaches his work with an emphasis on user experience, contextually driven analysis, and community engagement throughout the design process. In advocating for the active involvement of the design community in ending homelessness, he is currently leading a pro-bono effort with Northside Housing to design and build a new comprehensive care center in Chicago. Sean’s work has been featured by Architect Magazine, Healthcare Design Magazine, Curbed and Interior Design Magazine. In his free time, Sean can be found educating the public about bricks in architecture on his masonry “meme” twitter account (@seanw_m).
