What was once the 4.75-acre site of a jail for young offenders has become a nexus of creativity, entrepreneurship, and wellness in the Bronx neighborhood of Hunts Point. The Peninsula is composed of six residential buildings, including retail and community facilities space for food manufacturing and media production, and a parking deck. At the heart of this low-income neighborhood, is a design to fulfill the local residents’ desire for local jobs, economic diversity, and pride of place.

The plazas, step street and landscapes between and around the built and future buildings were designed by EKLA in collaboration with BLA/WXY to create shared public spaces and a sense of nature being present as a strong part of the project. This is visible in the integration of large rock outcroppings and ground and roof plantings knitting the buildings and streetscapes together.

Architect: WXY Studio
Landscape Architect: Elizabeth Kennedy Landscape Architecture (EKLA)
