The Congress for the New Urbanism New York State Chapter will conduct a Hoboken waterfront walking tour. The tour will show firsthand the New Urbanist design characteristics that make Hoboken a better place to live.

The Hoboken Waterfront Corporation has served “The Mile Square City” as a collaborative effort involving the City of Hoboken and its people, the Port Authority of NY/NJ, and private- sector partners.  Through its efforts, Hoboken’s previously industrial waterfront has been transformed into a mixed-use development flanked by Jersey City to the south and Weehawken to the north.

Once dominated by largely vacant piers and industrial waterfront properties, the space has been redeveloped as a transit-oriented, mixed-use development featuring retail space, restaurants, office space, a luxury hotel, residential units, and considerable recreational facilities. The area was designed with sensitivity to the contextual historic vernacular and existing street grid and provides continuous public access to the waterfront.

The Hoboken waterfront today is a desirable neighborhood boasting spectacular views of Manhattan, unparalleled access to public transit, award winning parks and a tree- lined esplanade. As the result of this initiative and its emphasis on daylighting at intersections and other human-centered transportation infrastructure design strategies and techniques, Hoboken has emerged as a beacon of “Vision Zero,” boasting ZERO pedestrian/biker fatalities in the past four years.

The tour will be led by Laura Sachs, AIA. The meeting place will be given by Eventbrite when you register.
