In 2021, the AIANY Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) hosted a three-part workshop to explore the potential of mycelium, the thread-like structures (hyphae) in fungi, as an innovative and sustainable building material for residential construction. Building future houses with house parts that are made from this carbon-absorbing natural resource could dramatically reduce the built environment's impact on the natural environment. The collaboration between architects, mycelium experts, building science engineers, structural engineers, and design students culminated in the development of a hypothetical custom residential commission for a retrofit of a large conservatory space within a home.

In this program, hear about how the Mycelium Project provides a platform for experimentation with mycelium in the context of residential architecture.
