AIANY Women in Architecture is pleased to co-sponsor the Architecture and Design Film Festival’s screening of Another Kind of Knowledge, which focuses on the renowned Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, a leader in the Scandinavian architectural world. In this portrait film, Mandrup herself unfolds the cornerstones of her practice, predicated on the synthesis of place, history, materiality, and sculpture. But who is Dorte Mandrup? What has shaped her approach to architecture? How does she approach her projects? More than a portrayal of Mandrup’s inner and outer landscapes, Another Kind of Knowledge is a fascinating story about the essence and conditions of contemporary architecture. After the film, there will be a 30-minute conversation with Mandrup.
Studies in sculpture, ceramics, and medicine have influenced Dorte Mandrup’s hands-on approach to architecture. Shape and form are integral to her firm’s ethos—to create spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, contextually relevant, and inviting.
Mandrup graduated from the Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark in 1991. Eight years later, she founded her Copenhagen-based studio. Her design philosophy and artistic yet systematic mindset permeate the entire office.
As a humanist with a distinct nonconformist outlook, Mandrup is well known for her commitment to the development of the architectural practice and her frequent participation in public debates. Receiving national and international acclaim for her work, in 2018 Dorte headlined a curated international exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia. Dorte is Vice Chairman of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a member of the Historic Buildings Council in Denmark, Chair of the 2019 Mies van der Rohe Award, and Adjunct Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She holds frequent visiting professorships abroad, including in 2018 at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.
