Building the Circular Society: Brick by Brick
11/17/21, 8:30am - 9:30am
Location
Zoom
1.0 LU / 1.0 HSW

According to the circular pioneers at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the circular economy is based on three fundamental questions:

  • What if waste and pollution were never created in the first place?
  • What if the economy were based on using things rather than using them up?
  • What if we could not only protect but actively improve the environment?

In Denmark, we like to add a fourth: What if we designed an irresistible circular society where circularity is a clear-cut choice—both as a business model and for end consumers?

With creative and holistic design-thinking, we can make solutions that actively address these challenges. The recently published white paper by Creative Denmark, “Designing the irresistible circular society,” offers concrete strategies to position circularity as an attractive alternative. AIA New York, together with the Danish General Consulate in New York City, NYCxDESIGN, and Creative Denmark invite you to the launch of the new publication.

The circular transition requires innovative thinking and collaboration across borders. For circularity to become irresistible, we need to build communities, innovative partnerships, and alliances—and we hope to start today.

About the Speakers:
Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard
is Partner and Head of Innovation at GXN and works with applied design research across 3XN Architects and GXN Innovation. He is interested in research and innovation in the built environment, specifically in the ways circular economy impacts architecture, environment, and business and what this means for design strategy.

Gregory Haley is an Associate Principal with Henning Larsen based in NYC with over 20 years of experience in architecture and urban design. Haley has taught architectural design studios at NJIT, NYIT, and the Boston Architectural Center and remains active as a guest critic or lecturer at various schools. Haley received his Masters of Architecture in Urban Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota. He is the board president of the Harvard Alumni Architectural and Urban Society, co-chair of the AIANY Global Dialogues Committee, and co-chair of the Urban Design Committee of the APA NY Metro Chapter. He is a fellow of the Urban Design Forum and a design resource team member for the Mayors’ Institute on City Design.

Tom Kennedy is a Principal with Arup, a global design and consulting firm. He trained as a civil engineer, a skill that has lead him to numerous projects and communities around the globe. He has had the fortune to have lived in various locations around the world, including Moscow, Singapore, Doha, Europe, and his native UK, but has been based in the US for the last 20 years. These opportunities have fostered a deep learning and understanding about cultural approaches to materials, design, and construction techniques. Kennedy has worked on a number of notable global and New York projects. He currently heads up Arup’s Civil Engineering skills, the Foresight and Innovation team in the Americas, and is charged with directing the Circular Economy business for Arup in the Americas.

Amanda Kaminsky is Founder and Principal of Building Product Ecosystems (BPE) LLC, collaborating with building owners and cities to optimize material resource cycles for whole system health. BPE leads multi-disciplinary collaborations that evolve feedstocks, recycling, infrastructure, and logistics for optimal systemic health and performance of building material resources, piloting improvements to product, process, standards, and infrastructure. BPE was founded by Kaminsky and The Durst Organization as a public private partnership with The New School, City University of New York, Healthy Building Network, and Vidaris. Before and during the early stages of BPE, she also led sustainable construction and procurement efforts at The Durst Organization. In collaboration with the NYC Department of Sanitation, she managed execution of New York’s first high rise residential organics collection/compost program, and further deployed those learnings in a roll-out of the first portfolio-wide commercial organics collection program in NYC. Kaminsky chairs the Health Product Declaration Collaborative Board, is a Director on the Recycling Certification Institute Board, and is an Advisory Board Member of the Carbon Leadership Forum. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from University of Virginia.
