It was the hottest summer of the decade, in the midst of a worldwide depression. To the relief and cheers of tens of thousands of its most disadvantaged citizens, 11 massive, state-of-the-art, public swimming pools were opened across New York’s five boroughs in June, July, and August of 1936. Discover how this massive infrastructure investment by the federal government drove ambitious architectural experimentation and collaboration, resulting in recreational infrastructure that we still enjoy today.
