The annual Gil Oberfield Memorial Lecture was founded in honor of Gil Oberfield, AIA, former member and chair of the AIANY Interiors Committee. The lecture brings to the podium speakers whose work excels in the field of interior architecture. This year’s lecture will feature Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects.

Jaklitsch/Gardner is an award-winning design practice with an international reputation for design excellence, material research, and an exacting commitment to craft. The firm was founded in 1998 and is led by Stephan Jaklitsch and Mark Gardner, who believe that design possesses the ability to communicate collective values, provide relevance, and create meaning.

Jaklitsch/Gardner has received AIANY Design Awards, an AIA National Honor Award for the Marc By Marc Jacobs Offices, Chicago Athenaeum Architecture Awards, Architizer A+ Awards, and have been honored by the Japan Institute of Architecture. Their work has been exhibited widely and featured in numerous publications, such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Interior Design magazine, Architectural Record, FRAME Magazine, Elle Décor, and Architectural Digest.

About the Speakers

Mark Gardner, AIA, NOMA, has led many of the firm’s design initiatives and works to best understand the role of design as a social practice. Gardner takes a serious interest in the nexus of architecture and arts and craft, one of long-standing importance to both his professional practice and to his writings. Born and raised in Williamsburg, VA, Gardner attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his B.S. in Architecture, and the University of Pennsylvania for his M.Arch degree. Gardner currently serves on the Board of Advisors at the Weitzman School of Design at UPenn. He also teaches at The New School/Parsons School of Design as an Assistant Professor of Architectural Practice and Society. Gardner also serves on the boards of the Youth Design Center and the Van Alen Institute. He is a member of the Urban Design Forum, the Architectural League of New York, and AIA New York.

Stephan Jaklitsch, FAIA, as Founding Principal, of Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects.Jaklitsch has led the practice from a studio focused on residential and commercial projects in the New York region to an award-winning architectural and interior design firm with a diverse, international portfolio of work known for its design and detailing. Jaklitsch is interested in how architecture, landscape, and urbanism affect the quality of life and is dedicated to crafting spaces, buildings, and products that convey a sense of purpose and meaning through their construction and use. He attended Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his B.S. in Architecture, and Princeton University for his M.Arch degree. He serves on the Board of Open House New York, and is a member of the Architectural League of New York, the Urban Design Forum, and AIA New York.
