Post-COVID Cities: Reinventing World Cities

“Reinventing Global Cities” is the second in a series of three high-profile events titled Post-COVID Cities, which focuses on the future of New York City following the pandemic. During this program, participants will learn how other global cities currently emerging from the pandemic are positioning themselves to reach aspirational social goals while implementing 21st-century zero-carbon policies.

About the Speakers:

Hélène Chartier is Head of Zero Carbon Development at C40 Cities. Her team develops programs and activities bringing together cities and progressive players in the built environment sector, in order to accelerate low carbon & resilient buildings and urban regeneration projects. Helene’s team leads the Reinventing Cities initiative as well as the C40 workstream on district and neighbourhood scale projects. She is also involved in the development of the 15 minutes City paradigm within C40 Cities. In the past, Hélène was advisor to the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. She also worked for the Paris Urbanism Agency and for the global consulting firm Arup.

Lucy Bullivant, PhD, Hon. FRIBA, is a place strategist, curatorial director, award-winning author, a keynote speaker, the founder and Creative Director, Urbanista.org, her webzine on liveable urbanism, and Expert – Specialist, Design Council, London. Her consultancy firm, Lucy Bullivant & Associates, has worked for over 25 years with international clients including Enfield Council, kommune Bydel Bjerke Oslo, the Latvian Investment and Development Agency, ANCB Berlin, Qatar University. Lucy is a chair of the Lambeth Design Review Panel and a Trustee of Temple Bar Trust. Lucy was elected an Honorary Fellow of RIBA in 2010, a lifetime honour, for her contribution to architectural culture globally. She has a PhD from London Metropolitan University’s School of Art, Architecture and Design, ‘From Masterplanning to Adaptive Planning: understanding the contemporary tools and processes for civic urban order’, and an MA(RCA) in Cultural History, from the Royal College of Art. Her publications include Masterplanning Futures (2012), winner of the Book of the Year award by Urban Design Group (2014), published in a second edition in 2021 and 4d Hyperlocal (Guest Editor, AD/Wiley, 2017), and she has written extensively on architecture and urban design, and judged many competitions ranging from ArchMarathon to AJ Architecture Awards over many decades. She has staged successful exhibitions at the Oslo Architecture Triennale (Dugnad Days, 2019); Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture (Remake Wemake, 2015-6) and the São Paulo Biennale of Architecture (Frontiera Livre, 2017); Roca London Gallery (Urbanistas: women innovators in architecture, urban and landscape design, 2014) and for clients including Vitra Design Museum, the British Council and Milan Triennale. She has given numerous public talks and chaired many events globally, and is represented by Speakers Associates.

Vicente Guallart was a chief architect (2011-2015) of Barcelona City Council with the responsibility of developing the strategic vision for the city and its major development projects. He also co-founded and directed the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (2001-2011) where he led projects such as Media House Project (with MIT’s CBA), HyperCatalunya, or the Fab Lab House. His professional office, Guallart Architects has developed projects widely published like the ports of Fugee and Keelung in Taiwan, or the Sociopolis neighbourhood in Valencia and now it works in projects of several scales around the world. He is developing now projects in China, Russia. He is the author of books like Plans and Projects of Barcelona (2011-15) Geologic or The Self-Sufficient City and co-author of the Metapolis Dictionary of Advanced Architecture. His work has been exhibited at the Biennale of Venezia or NY MOMA. The American Institute of Architects organized in 2010 a solo exhibition of his work in Washington DC. Recently, Guallart won the Self-Sufficient City Competition for Post-Coronavirus China, an international competition for the design of a mixed-use community in Xiong’an, China, defining an urban model that merges the traditional European urban blocks, the Chinese modern towers, and the productive farming landscape.
