“Spec” buildings, almost by definition, are core and shell structures with the interior fit-out designed later. Interior programs are often not defined beyond horizontal/vertical access and egress.  A wealth of scientific and technical data relating to the performance of buildings, one of contemporary architecture’s primary assets, can be used to avoid potential pitfalls under this scenario.  This presentation will cover the aspects of heat, air, and moisture transfer that impact our built environment, and the interaction of HVAC and enclosure systems with interior spaces, and people.

We will review example building projects to identify practical solutions that can be implemented to improve a person’s sense of comfort within interior spaces. We will also explore the differences between the requirements for designing spaces for specialty buildings (museums, natatoriums), health care, and spaces for children (schools and daycare).
