Hosted by the New York City Transit Museum, join us for a live, remote book reading by authors Berta de Miguel and Kent Diebolt, accompanied by author/illustrator, Virginia Lorente, who will demonstrate and discuss the illustration techniques she used to create the book.

The book was written for children of all ages, to illuminate the important cultural history of “Guastavino” vaults and to tell the story of a middle-aged master builder and his young son, who emigrated from Spain to the United States in 1881, speaking no English whatsoever.

This is the story of an ambitious dream, construction technology transfer from the Old World to the New and a tale of true immigrant imagination, grit and determination. It is also the story behind many beloved and iconic cultural landmarks such as the Boston Public Library, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, the Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station and several important sites owned, operated and maintained by New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority or MTA.
