Where are all the [Queer] Womxn? In conversation with Ila Berman and Lok Chan.

Womxn make up over half of the enrolled students in architectural degree programs. However, once they begin to navigate the professional realm, we see that the number of womxn who become registered, achieve upper management levels, become partners, and own architectural firms has not increased at the same rate or in the same proportion as their male architectural counterparts. Currently only 17 percent of registered architects are womxn. In the fields of Engineering and Construction those numbers are even lower.

While the industry is making progress through efforts of inclusion and equity there is still a significant lack of out queer womxn at all levels. Without the visible representation, how can we shift the discourse to not just invite womxn to the table, but encourage them to share their design perspective and speak with their authentic voice? Speaking with two out queer womxn, one emerging and one who has challenged this throughout her career, we aim to dive into the specifics of how the intersectionality of our identities affects our design philosophy, our approach to practice/work, and our outlook for the future of the industry.
