Organized by the AIANY Interiors Committee, this series of presentations explores the honorees of the 2021 AIANY Design Awards in the Interiors category. Project presentations will be led by the architectural design firm and will be followed by a Q&A.

Presented by Atelier Alter Architects, 2021 AIANY Design Award Winner for Yingliang Stone Natural History Museum

Yingliang Stone Natural History Museum is located at the headquarters of a stone manufacturer in Xiamen, a coastal city in Southern China. Over years of stone mining, the manufacturer established a private archeological team to discover fossils, which they ultimately decided to house in a museum. The project transforms the principal of stone dissection, which is specific to stone mining, into a spatial division mechanism to cut the cubical space accordingly. The project sticks to only one architecture element—the wall—to keep its consistency and authenticity. The museum elevates industry through an “industry and culture” approach.

About Atelier Alter Architects:

Founded in 2009, Atelier Alter Architects is a pioneering inter-disciplinary practice based in New York and Beijing. Noted for designing from critical analysis of the site, Atelier Alter has been recognized by numerous awards, including the 2016 SARA National Award of Excellence, the 2016 and 2014 IDOL Gold Prize, the 2013 Awards by Lighting Design Weekly, and the 2010 Excellence in Architecture Design of Fujian. Since the inception of their practice, Atelier Alter has focused intensely on culture facilities. The firm has won the competition to build Qujing Culture Center in 2009 through a proposal that transferred the metaphysical context of the site into an artistic yet tangible urban space of historic remembrance. The Senior Culture Center, a commission won by Atelier Alter in 2010 and completed in 2014, exploded the typological transformation ofthe  bamboo bungalow into a public facility. Projects by Atelier Alter have been published and featured by international press outlets, including Domus, WA, A+A, Russian Design Hub, I’Arca International, Cooper Publishing, HKPIP, Il Nuovo Cantiere, Landscape Design, Archdaily, Designboom, and others.
