NYC’s bird-friendly building legislation, Local Law 15 of 2020, will take effect in January 2021. This law has flown under the radar, leaving many architects, clients, and building professionals unaware of its requirements and unprepared for its effects. The session will describe the issues behind the law and its requirements, including a recently completed NYC Department of Buildings guidance document. Examples of bird-friendly building design and solutions to enable compliance will be presented.

About the speakers:

Christine Sheppard has been director of American Bird Conservancy’s Glass Collisions Program since 2009. She has lead instrumental bird collision mitigation efforts including testing of materials, the publication Bird-Friendly Building Design, LEED Pilot Credit 55: Bird Collision Deterrence, and consulting on related legislation throughout the US.

Laura Grieco is a registered professional engineer working in the NYC metro Area for over 20 years both in the public and private sectors. Grieco earned her ME degree in Environmental Engineering from Manhattan College in 2006, her MS degree in Environmental Technology from NYIT in 2001 and her BS degree in Chemical Engineer from Universidad Simon Bolivar in 1999.

Dan Popadynec, PE is a Principal at Vidaris and is the practice leader for the new building enclosure group. He has over 20 years in the industry and was the lead façade consultant on over 80 new construction buildings in New York including two towers at the World Trade Center and more recently, 1 Vanderbilt. Dan has had leading participation on NYC Department of Buildings code review committees for the past 9 years updating chapters related to enclosure and special inspections.

Dan Piselli is an architect with over 20 years of experience, and Director of Sustainability at FXCollaborative. He has been working on bird-friendly buildings since 2005, contributed to the publication Bird-Friendly Building Design, and is a member of the Bird Safe Glass Alliance.

Stefan Knust is the Director of Sustainability at Ennead Architects and is a member of the Bird Safe Building Alliance. Ennead helped author LEED Pilot Credit 55 – Bird Collision Deterrence.
