Book Talk: Stanford White in Detail

Nothing defines Stanford White, a partner in the legendary architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White, and the master of classical architecture and interior design, as much as his ornamental detail. And that detail decorated some of the most distinctive sites found in Greenwich Village. Few if any architects before or since employed decorative motifs with such flair, drew on so great a range of ideas, or achieved a density bordering on saturation without losing control. In his newest book, Stanford White in Detail, author, architect, and White’s great-grandson Samuel G. White examines the innovative and intricate decorative web of carved wood and marble, metalwork, mosaic and tile that was his ancestor’s signature.

Samuel G. White has practiced architecture since 1974. His diverse portfolio of educational, institutional, and residential projects focuses on designs that introduce new interventions to historic settings in ways that both reinforce and reinterpret their contexts. He went to Harvard and then to Penn for architecture school. Mr. White is a National Academician and a trustee or advisor to a number of educational and arts organizations, and lectures broadly.
