Public transportation provides access to the fundamentals of community life, including jobs, commerce, education, and healthcare. Yet, historically, the communities who are most dependent on transportation have often been the most marginalized in decision-making about relevant services and assets. Today that is beginning to change; momentum is building to commit more authority to the lived expertise of those whose daily lives are contingent on public transportation. Furthermore, public engagement efforts are shifting from perfunctory one-off events to more authentic and continuous participation in transportation projects. This program looks at the changing dynamics between people and projects and how communities are moving from the margins to the center of transportation design.
