The AIA New York State Unified Task Force challenges you and the broader AEC to examine several areas of the built environment, from temporary measures applied to public streets to vacant ground-floor spaces. Design challenge participants will produce findings to identify specific design opportunities across a range of use types (e.g. restaurant, retail, commercial, rooftops, vacant, etc.), evaluating integrated solutions at a single site level and envisioning opportunities scaled to the block or corridor level. The findings are meant to build on New York City’s existing Street Design Manual to integrate with existing guidance.

The AIA and its partners will host a series of design challenges to develop recommendations specific to the needs of each borough, responding to criteria such as temporal (day/night) needs, seasonal needs, use patterns, space types, and governance (e.g., business improvement districts, community design trust, no entity to coordinate at the neighborhood scale). The findings will illustrate space types or example streets, and not address specific recommendations for a given location. The challenge will look at immediate needs and long term changes.

The first event will be a listening session with community groups representing each of the five boroughs. Each borough representative will describe current challenges with COVID-19 and ongoing obstacles exacerbated by the pandemic, followed by moderated dialogue among borough representatives and guests.
