About the Moderator and Speakers

Melissa Billig has an active transactional and litigation practice with a specialization in design and construction law. She provides sophisticated legal, risk, and business counsel to real estate owners, developers, and design and construction professionals in connection with project agreements, contract disputes, defective construction, and adjacent property issues. Billig has represented clients in various development projects, including the Javits Convention Center renovation, the Governors Island Park renovation, the Shed (Hudson Yards), the World Trade Center Disaster Site, and condominium construction. 

Billig is an active member of the Board of Directors for the Center for Architecture and is involved in various committees including the Development and Marketing committees. She is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; the United States District Court, District of New Jersey and the New York and New Jersey State Bars.  

Robert J. Brewer is a Partner, Past Executive Committee Member, and the Architecture & Engineering Practice Leader at Grassi. Brewer began his career in 1987 and has extensive experience in tax planning, accounting, estate planning, succession planning, and mergers and acquisitions. Brewer’s insight, wisdom, and creativity allow him to provide expert business advice to a broad range of industries, including architecture & engineering, construction, not-for-profit, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and transportation.
 
Brewer served on the board for the New York Center for Architecture, and was one of the core committee members forming the NYC chapter of the Lean Construction Institute (LCI). He also served as treasurer of the New York City Chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) and on the Board of the Long Island Business Development Council. Brewer is an active associate member of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), where he currently co-chairs the CFO Committee. He is currently an Advisory Board member to the Ronald McDonald House Charities New York Metro.
 
Brewer is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and is distinguished as one of the first in the country to earn the CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) designation from the Institute of Certified Construction Financial Professionals (ICCFP).

Sheila di Gasper represents clients in a broad range of corporate & business matters including business structuring/restructuring, succession planning, mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, strategic collaborations, and debt and equity financings. In addition to representing clients in transactional matters, Di Gasper has served as outside general counsel to a number of companies, guiding them in an array of general business law matters, including commercial arrangements, employment matters, securities law compliance and corporate governance.

Warren E. Friss represents small and mid-size companies, including many in the construction and design industry, as well as individual architects, engineers and design professionals. Friss provides clients with a uniquely business-minded approach to the provision of legal services, leveraging more than 30 years of experience in private practice, as general counsel to a public company, as a senior business executive, and as an entrepreneur himself. He is responsive, client-oriented, and guides clients in a practical and cost-efficient manner.
