Please join the AIANY Housing Committee for its sixth program in a series that highlights exemplary international housing design. As the contemporary practice of housing in many cities seeks to fit more and more people in less and less space, we thought what better time to invite practitioners whose work takes a decidedly different approach to addressing questions around delivery, distance, density, and design of affordable housing. Less is not necessarily more, nor is farther better, but the pre-pandemic paradigms that perpetuated the opposite certainly warrant a rethinking.
We’ll hear from: Brendan MacFarlane of Jakob MacFarlane based in Paris, France; Paul Karakusevic of Karkusevic and Carson based in London, England; and Shirley Blumberg of KPMB based in Toronto, Canada. Brian Loughlin, Director of Planning and Urban Design, Magnusson Architecture & Planning, will moderate the panel, and Rebecca Macklis, Senior Urban Design Manager at the NYC Public Design Commission (PDC) will provide opening comments on PDC’s recently launched housing database, which marks the second phase of the agency’s Designing New York: Quality Affordable Housing initiative.
This event is offered in collaboration with the NYC Public Design Commission as a continuation of their partnership with the AIANY Housing Committee in recognizing and elevating the importance of quality affordable housing in the City of New York.
