COVID-19 and the economic downtown has fundamentally altered the job market for students and emerging professionals. This program will provide advice and strategies for emerging designers and architects navigating the current field, as well as guidance on broader ways to stay engaged in the profession. This program is organized by AIA New York and the American Institute of Architecture Students.

Moderator Kavitha Mathew, AIA, LEED AP, Director, Leadership and Engagement Initiatives, AIA New York
Alastair Wallace studied architecture at the University of Manchester and the University of Hong Kong. He then spent ten years working for award-winning architecture firms based in the UK. Looking for a change, in November of 2016 he moved to New York and joined the Bespoke Careers architecture team, recruiting for top firms such as SOM, FXCollaborative, Grimshaw, and Deborah Berke Partners. Wallace now leads the Bespoke Careers New York office, coordinating the architecture, interiors, and business support teams.
Francesca Fanelli is the former Assistant Director of Career Services for Architecture and Urban Design Programs at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. She has extensive experience providing career advice to architecture and design students. In her current role at Columbia, she oversees advising and programming of professional development initiatives, helping student PhD and MA student career exploration and development.
Benjamin Prosky, Assoc. AIA,has been Executive Director of the American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) and the Center for Architecture since February 2016. Previously, he served as Assistant Dean for Communications at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has also held positions at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Canadian Center for Architecture, and French Institute of Architecture. Prosky is a co-founder of ARCHITIZER.
Sarah Curry, AIAS, Assoc. AIA, NOMA, lives and works in Washington, DC as the current President of the American Institute of Architecture Students. Once her term ends later this year, she hopes to practice and explore her passions for evidence-based and equitable design while pursuing licensure and continuing to advocate for students. A B.Arch graduate of Auburn University’s Rural Studio, Sarah’s very flexible life plans include going to graduate school, teaching, and eventually enjoying nontraditional practice in the vast field of architecture.
Kavitha Mathew, AIA, strives to enhance engagement opportunities for AIA New York members, with a focus on developing leadership and community service initiatives. She is a registered architect with over 20 years of experience in the field, and is dedicated to elevating the practice to be more inclusive and equitable. She holds architecture degrees from the University of Virginia and Columbia University.
