Josep Ferrando is an architect from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB), founding partner of Josep Ferrando Architecture and Dean of the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura La Salle Barcelona (ETSALS). He combines the profession, teaching and cultural management from the beginning of his career.
His work has been exhibited in various countries such as the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Portugal and Japan, among others. He has made monographic samples of his work at the Biennale di Architettura di Venezia 2014, the prestigious Architekturforum Aedes gallery in Berlin and the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. He has lectured at the Harvard GSD, Cornell University, the Catholic University of Chile, the IUAV of Venice, the HCU of Hamburg, the Facoltà di Architettura of Palermo, among others; and at international conferences such as the UIA’11 in Tokyo and the BIAU’19 in Asunción. His work has received international recognition, being the winner of the FAD awards, the first prize at the International Architecture Biennial of Buenos Aires BIABA’15 and finalist of the Iakov Chernikov International Award.
He has developed an intense teaching career in parallel since 1998, mainly at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB), at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura La Salle (ETSALS) and at the School of Architecture and Urban Studies of the UTDT in Buenos Aires, where he publishes the book Bitácora Barcelona (UTDT, 2014); in addition to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the Hochschule für Technik Zürich (HSZT), the School of Design and Art Eina and the Istituto Europea di Design (IED) of Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro where he is Director of the Master Space Design Methodology He has also been a visiting professor at the Escola da Cidade de Sao Paulo, at the University of Architecture of Calgary and at the Positive University of Curitiba (UNICENP). The intense study on collective housing developed in the “Housing and City” course of the ETSAB was rewarded with the 2016 City of Barcelona Award.
In the cultural field he has participated in numerous juries among which the FAD Awards 2018 and the XI BIAU, and since 2018 he directs the Department of Culture of the College of Architects of Catalonia, at which time he has been awarded the National Culture Award.
