Join Benjamin Prosky, Assoc. AIA, Executive Director of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY) and a panel of distinguished urban leaders to discuss Sunnyside Yard and how future generations can leverage this exceptionally important site to advance the long-term interests of the city and region.

Located in Western Queens, Sunnyside Yard is one of the busiest rail yards in the country, at the center of a rail network that extends throughout the region and the Northeast. The City of New York and Amtrak have led an extensive, community-driven master planning process to establish a long-term framework for decking over the Yard. This would create a huge amount of publicly-controlled land that could help meet the 21st century needs of a growing borough and city sustainably and equitably.

Leading up to the discussion with distinguished panelists, a presentation providing an overview of the planning process will be provided by Senior Strategist Skylar Bisom-Rapp from the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism and from Adam Grossman Meagher, Director of the Sunnyside Yard planning process.

This panel will explore the objectives of the forthcoming master plan, particularly the critical issue of developing affordable working- and middle-class housing that meets the needs of all New Yorkers. The panelists will also discuss the benefits of a long-term plan that can serve as a framework to guide decision-making and ensure community involvement over time.

Panelists:

  • Vicki Been, Deputy Mayor for Housing & Economic Development
  • Melva Miller, Executive Vice President, Association for a Better New York
  • Tom Wright, President & CEO, Regional Plan Association

Moderator:

Benjamin Prosky, Assoc. AIA, Executive Director, AIANY and the Center for Architecture
