Department of Design and Construction: Correctional Facilities RFQ

Join the American Institute of Architects New York and the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) along with a panel of leaders in architecture, urban planning, and criminal justice reform to discuss ensuring distinguished design for NYC’s Borough-Based Jails Program.

In February, the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC), on behalf of the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) and the NYC Department of Correction (DOC), issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for Design-Build teams that will construct four new borough-based jails. Passed by the City Council in early October, the City’s plan to close the jails on Rikers Island and build smaller, safer, and fairer borough-based jail facilities comes at a time when New York City has the lowest crime and incarceration rates of any large city in the United States.

This is part of a once-in-many-generations opportunity to build a more humane justice system that includes four facilities grounded in dignity and respect, offering better connections to and space for families, attorneys, courts, medical and mental health care, education, therapeutic programming and service providers. The City is seeking to create buildings that are equal in ambition to the transformational changes that have taken place and continue to unfold in the City’s criminal justice system. 

This event builds upon engagement between the AIA New York Architecture for Justice Committee and the City of New York about its vision and approach to the Borough-Based Jails Program. The panel discussion will focus on the City’s goal for innovative design solutions and project excellence within the context of the City’s approach to Design Build program delivery.
