Please join us for a film screening of Decade of Fire, a documentary about the South Bronx in the 1970s told by Bronx-born Vivian Vazquez Irizarry. Abandoned by city government, nearly a half-million people were displaced as their close-knit, multi-ethnic neighborhood burned, reducing it to rubble. While insidious government policies were a root cause of the devastation, Black and Puerto Rican residents shouldered the blame. In this story of hope and resistance, Vivian Vazquez Irizarry exposes the truth about the borough’s untold history and reveals how her embattled and maligned community chose to remain and rebuild. Decade of Fire tells the story of the South Bronx that you’ve never heard before and offers us a roadmap for how to build the communities we want and truly deserve.

The screening will be followed by interactive roundtable conversations with representatives from the AIANY Planning and Urban Design and Diversity and Inclusion Committees, nycobaNOMA, and two of the co-producers of the film, Julia Steele Allen and Neyda Martinez.
