To celebrate the launch of his latest book, A History of New York in 27 Buildings: The 400-Year Untold Story of an American Metropolis, former New York Times urban affairs correspondent Sam Roberts sits down for a conversation with Curbed architecture critic Alexandra Lange. They’ll share the stories behind our city’s most transformative structures from architectural icons like the Empire State Building to lesser-known sites such as the city’s oldest continuously operating theater and the building where the Founding Fathers added the Bill of Rights to the Constitution.

About the Speakers:

Sam Roberts is the former urban affairs correspondent at the New York Times and is the host of “The New York Times Close Up,” an hour-long weekly news and interview program on CUNY-TV. He is the author of many books, most recently A History of New York in 27 Buildings: The 400-Year Untold Story of an American Metropolis (Bloomsbury, 2019).

Alexandra Lange is the architecture critic for Curbed. Her essays, reviews, and profiles have appeared in numerous design publications including New York Magazine, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. Her latest book, The Design of Childhood: How the Material World Shapes Independent Kids, was published in June 2018.
